Hiring Horror Story Number 1

The Biggest Hiring Mistake of My Life

My company hired a brand new manager I'll call “Fred”. We thought Fred would become a crackerjack employee. For the first few months, everything seemed to go well. And then, it started – we heard the muttered whisperings of his staff, peer group, and customers about how hard it was to deal with him.

At first, we put Fred's behavior off to the stress of the job. But as time passed, the complaints from his staff got louder. And then his co-workers began requesting transfers to other managers or other departments.

BECAUSE OF FRED… We Lost Our Best People.

Some of them said that they were moving on to “better opportunities” but I knew why they were REALLY leaving. Some of them had been with us for as long as eight years. We talked to Fred about his actions and he got disruptive and vengeful. He was going to blame everyone else no matter what. His supervisors eventually had no choice but to assign him to a “special project” that allowed him to remain with the company, but took him away from mainstream interaction with others.

Eventually, Fred did leave the company. In addition to losing the time and money we spent to hire and train him, there was the cost of lost productivity and damaged morale to the rest of the team. The team is finally back on track, but it's taken a long time.

I THOUGHT I HIRED A WINNER

As a busy CEO of a fast-growing company, I believe that a good assistant is the backbone of my business. I've got to have a first-rate assistant who handles logistics that make my office run smoothly. Complaints piled up and I discovered that my business accounts were affected. Money that should have been there was gone. Clients had been improperly billed or not billed at all. Contractors had been improperly paid or not paid at all. And then I discovered that Sally was writing checks to herself from company funds.
